US WWI Victory Medal, 5 Campaign Clasps
150,00 €
Very fine US World War I Victory Medal with five campaign clasps, original ribbon and a functional wrap brooch suspension.
The medal is made of bronze and measures 3.6 cm in diameter. The obverse features a winged Victory, standing full-length and facing forward. The reverse bears the inscription “THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILIZATION”, together with the United States shield bearing the letters “U.S.”, surmounted by a fasces. The names of the Allied and Associated nations appear on either side.
The silk ribbon, measuring 3.6 cm in width, represents two rainbows placed side by side, with red in the center.
The five clasps are mounted in their official order:
- AISNE — 27 May – 5 June 1918
- MONTDIDIER-NOYON — 9 – 13 June 1918
- ST. MIHIEL — 12 – 16 September 1918
- MEUSE-ARGONNE — 26 September – 11 November 1918
- DEFENSIVE SECTOR
The combination of the five clasps reflects the operations in which the recipient actually participated. Their award was based on the serviceman’s actual presence under competent orders and could apply to personnel belonging to an organization, attached to it, or serving it in an independent capacity. The combination of clasps could therefore differ from that awarded to an entire division, depending in particular on the serviceman’s period of assignment and the circumstances of his service, such as evacuation following wounds.
