A cloth banner commemorating the departure from the city of Niigata to Manchuria, dated 1937.
This original banner is designed in the form of a schematic map depicting the route between the city of Niigata, Japan, and Manchuria It is centered on a large red sun disc, echoing the iconic motif of the Japanese Hinomaru, at the center of which appears the inscription “Commemoration of the Departure to Manchuria.”
On the left-hand side, the large characters 新潟県 (Niigata-ken) indicate “Niigata Prefecture”, while 新潟市 (Niigata-shi) means “Niigata City.”
On the right-hand side, the city of Niigata (新潟) is again indicated, while the vertical inscription 皇紀二五九七年 gives the date according to the Japanese Imperial calendar: Imperial Year 2597, corresponding to 1937.
The map features a route drawn in black connecting Niigata with the main destinations in Manchuria, giving the banner both a commemorative and documentary character. The explicit references to Niigata, Hsinking and Harbin, together with the 1937 date, place the piece precisely within the context of Japanese movements to Manchuria on the eve of the Second World War.
