French Commemorative Medal for the China Expedition 1900-1901, Boxer Rebellion
130,00 €
French commemorative medal for the China Expedition of 1900-1901, awarded in recognition of military operations carried out during the Boxer Rebellion.
Silver medal, hallmarked on the edge.
The obverse features the bust of the French Republic wearing a foliage-adorned colonial helmet, surrounded by the inscription “RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE”. Signed by the engraver “GEORGES LEMAIRE”.
The reverse depicts a Chinese pagoda, accompanied by a naval anchor crossed with artillery cannons, the French flag and the inscription “1900 CHINE 1901”.
Articulated suspension loop decorated with two Chinese dragons.
Diameter: 30 mm.
Note: upon closer examination of the obverse, clearly visible in the first photograph, what appears to be traces of two initials, “B. D.”, can be seen on the left-hand side of the medal. These could possibly correspond to the initials of Bernard Doumergue, a French sailor who enlisted voluntarily in 1899, to whom this medal belonged, as it comes directly from his family’s descendants. However, this remains a hypothesis. The marks observed could also be simple oxidation spots or surface alterations.
