Instituted by Napoleon III in 1857, this medal honors the “companions in glory” of Napoleon I who took part in the military campaigns from 1792 to 1815. It was created to partially fulfill the last wishes of Napoleon Bonaparte, as expressed in his will written on Saint Helena.
