Period: Second World War
Award conditions for these medals:
1939–1945 Star
- Eligibility: Awarded for six months of operational service during WWII between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945.
- Theatre of War: Includes Army, Navy, Air Force in operational areas. Aircrew must complete one operational sortie, and ground crew must serve in support roles in operational theaters.
Burma Star
- Eligibility: Awarded to personnel who served in the Burma campaign between 11 December 1941 and 2 September 1945.
- Area of Service: Includes operations in Burma, China, Malaya, and Sumatra. Royal Navy personnel must serve in specific operational waters. Air Force requires one operational sortie.
- Prerequisite: The 1939–1945 Star must be earned first.
Defence Medal
- Eligibility: For non-operational service in the UK and overseas territories under attack, or for non-combat personnel, such as Home Guard, Civil Defence, and similar roles.
- Service Period: Minimum of three years’ service between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945.
- Conditions: Includes 1 year of service overseas or 6 months in territories subjected to air raids or invasions.
1939–1945 War Medal
- Eligibility: Awarded to all full-time personnel who served for at least 28 days between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945.
