Medal made of an aluminum-bronze alloy.

On the obverse, the chrysanthemum crest is depicted along with the sacred double bridge leading to the inner gardens of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. In the background are representations of the ancestral shrine, the imperial shrine, and the Imperial Palace.

The reverse bears the following inscriptions: “Commemorative Medal of the 2600th National Anniversary” and “15th year of Shōwa” below.

The ribbon is purple with eight red stripes. Purple symbolizes the Great Heaven, while red represents loyalty. The eight stripes signify the motto “hakko-ichi-u” (all the world under one roof).

The 2600th anniversary of the founding of Japan was celebrated in November 1940 to commemorate 2,600 years since the legendary founding of Japan by Emperor Jimmu, the first Emperor of Japan, in 660 BC. According to traditional Japanese historical accounts, Emperor Jimmu ascended the throne on February 11, 660 BC, marking the beginning of the Japanese imperial lineage.
