Set of Two Medals Awarded to a Zouave: Battles of the Marne and the Somme
A set of two medals awarded to the same Zouave, Sergeant-Quartermaster Léon Raugel.
The Marne medal bears the following inscription on the reverse: “Léon Raugel – 1st Zouave Regiment – 19th Company – Retreat from Belgium – Fismes – Le Godat – Craonne – 1914”.
The Somme medal bears the following inscription: “Sergeant-Quartermaster Léon Raugel – 9th Zouave Regiment – 3rd Battalion – 10th Company”.
His service record (available in digital format) provides the following information:
Recalled to active duty by decree on August 1, 1914, he joined his unit on August 3, 1914. He was sent as reinforcement to the front on September 10, 1914, and promoted to Corporal-Quartermaster on September 18, 1914.
He was evacuated wounded (shrapnel wound) on January 17, 1915. Sent back to the front on February 9, 1916, he was promoted to Sergeant-Quartermaster on March 11, 1916.
He returned to the depot on October 8, 1916, was assigned to the military workshops at Puteaux on October 9, 1916, and was struck off strength on October 10, 1916.
He was placed on indefinite leave (demobilized) on August 15, 1919.
Wounds, citations, decorations:
Wounded on January 17, 1915.
Citation dated March 8, 1916: “Displayed remarkable composure by ensuring perfect liaison between neighboring units despite extremely heavy bombardment on March 2.”
Awarded the Croix de Guerre on March 3, 1916, on the battlefield.
