British Princess Mary Christmas Gift Box, World War I
The Princess Mary Christmas Gift Box was a brass box given to Commonwealth soldiers and sailors for Christmas 1914, at the initiative of Princess Mary.
This gift, intended for troops on duty, contained cigarettes and tobacco for smokers, while non-smokers received chocolate, sweets, writing supplies, and lozenges.
Each box also included a photograph of Princess Mary and greeting cards signed by King George V, Queen Mary, and the princess.
The allied countries are featured on the box: France, Russia, Belgium, Japan, Montenegro, and Serbia, along with a portrait of Princess Mary at its center and the inscriptions “Christmas 1914” and “Imperium Britannicum.”
