The French paratroopers played a central role in the Algerian War, participating in decisive operations in the fight against nationalist insurgents. They were frequently deployed in counter-insurgency missions, aimed at locating, neutralizing, and dismantling the FLN (National Liberation Front) combatant networks. These operations included patrols in difficult terrain, ambushes, raids on enemy bases, as well as sweeping actions in mountainous regions, such as the Aurès and Kabylie, where the independence fighters had strongholds.

Their mission was not limited to direct engagement with rebel forces. They also played a role in maintaining order, often in urban areas, with the goal of pacifying neighborhoods favorable to the FLN and ensuring the safety of French and pro-French Algerian civilian populations. They were responsible for supervising local populations in regroupment centers to try to sever the ties between the FLN and the Algerian civilians, who often provided logistical support or acted as informants for the insurgents.

The paratroopers were heavily involved in repressive actions against FLN cells during the Battle of Algiers in 1957, where their role was crucial in dismantling the networks in the Casbah. General Jacques Massu and the paratroopers of the 10th Parachute Division (10e DP) notably orchestrated this operation. These units were seen as extremely effective from a military standpoint, capable of handling urban guerrilla warfare and asymmetric warfare tactics.
