On the obverse of the medal, we can observe the effigy of the Republic wearing a visor bearing the word “Patrie” (Homeland), with the inscription “RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE” around the edge.

The reverse bears the inscriptions: “Tonkin, China, Annam, 1883–1885” and the names of the seven battles: “Cau-Giaï, Sontay, Bac-Ninh, Fou-Tchéou, Formose, Tuyen-Quan and Pescadores”.
